This story begins with Mr. Cecil Maxfield opening his plumbing company at 14 N Howard in 1929. Shortly thereafter, in 1931, Mr. Francis Gardner buys his business and start his own company called Gardner Plumbing and Heating. Mr. Gardner worked out of that little old building there until 1949 when he temporarily moved his business to 9 Ward Street. He would moved once more around 1954. His new address becomes 57 Ward Street; where we stand today. He operated his business for a total of 35 years. Our grandpa even worked as one of his apprentices.

So this is where our family's journey begins, in 1966, when our grandparents, Bob and Bea Norman, purchased Gardner Plumbing and Heating.  Along the way, in 1984, we proudly installed one of Michigan's first closed loop geothermal systems and we go on to successfully install hundreds of open and closed loop geothermal systems in our area over the next several decades. Many of which are still operating today. In 1995, just short of 30 years in business, Grandpa Bob passed away. And by 1996, our father, Mark Cummings, began running the family business. It would become more known simply as GPH. That is, until 2006, when we changed the business name to GeoMasters to stand apart and help better reflect our focus of Geothermal Heat Pump Systems. After 21 years under our dad's managment, in 2017, he passed away leaving this business to both of his sons, Joel Cummings and Joseph Flint. They proudly took the reins to make this company third generation family owned and operated!

These 60 years have been quite a ride. Many other family members have worked here and some continue to work with us; Uncle Jerry Cummings, Uncle Phil Norman, Dave Anderson, Aunt Cindy Anderson (who passed away in 2025), Jamie Cummings-Kersten, Matt McCracken, Mike McCracken, Russell Darling, and Alex Cummings just to name a few. Together we hope to make those that came before us proud by continuing our family's legacy for many more decades.
